Perfect Party on a Budget

Every year I try to throw an unforgettable birthday party for my daughter. We have thrown swimming parties, hotel parties, character parties, and so many others I could not possibly remember them all. As her birthday approached this year, I began searching for ideas to improve upon last year, but I also found myself with a new dilemma. Until this year money has not really been an object, but due to the economy’s downward spiral, my husband has taken a serious pay cut.

When I began planning I started looking for a way to cut costs while still having a fabulous party. My prayers were soon answered. I went online and found fantastic prices on party wares that will really make her birthday celebration awesome.

This year’s theme will be “The Princess vs. the Pirates.” It will include an outdoor dinner with imitation gold plates, plastic ware, and cups. The tables will be covered in plastic ruffled table clothes in her favorite color, red. There will be a fairy to help serve the guests and a sorceress to entertain them with magic tricks. Of course there will be a pirate attack where my birthday princess will be captured but released because of her overwhelming charm. Best of all I have managed to arrange all of this for only about $250.

I know that you are probably thinking that is impossible, right? Well let me tell you how I did it. When I had the idea for such a lavish affair, I too doubted I would be able to afford it. Then I went online and found I would be able to find all of the décor and tableware as well as the costumes and props for the servers and entertainment at a huge discount.

The fact that I would be able to purchase these items at such a low cost gave me another idea. I contacted the drama department at a local high school and offered to donate the costumes and props as well as $50 in exchange for them providing a server, a sorceress, and three pirates. Since the economy had hit the school district as hard as it had hit everyone else, they jumped at the chance to get this kind of donation. Now, not only am I receiving their services at an extremely low rate, but I am also receiving a tax deduction for the donation!

I even managed to save money on the food we will be serving. Rather than using a private caterer I checked the prices at our local discount grocery store. It turns out that they provide an amazing assortment of food trays for very little cost. Before my budgeting began I had been hesitant to use these services. I was concerned we would end up with sandwich trays of slimy lunch meat and warm crusty cheese, but that is not the case at all. Thanks to the wonderful options available I will be offering my daughter’s guests a full roasted chicken meal for less than $100.

Think extravagant and shop online. There really is no better way to plan a party. Follow these tips and you will not be disappointed.
