We live in a world where it’s too easy to be sedentary. Less exercise and access to convenience foods is really starting to take a toll on people’s health. The best way to get back on track to a healthy lifestyle is to make an appointment with your physician to get some expert advice.

The One Plus One Weight Reduction Plan

It seems as if there is a new fad diet every day. Every new diet pitchman comes on the television or radio telling you how easy it is to lose weight. They also tell you that there is a secret to losing weight, or a new breakthrough that doctors don’t want you to know about. The one thing they all have in common is that they try to make it sound as though you can lose weight without hard work and sacrifice. They’re all wrong.

At the end of the day, if you want to weigh less the next time you step on your doctor’s scale, you need to take in fewer calories than you burn. For most people, that means two things, eating less and exercising more. For every 3500 calories that you burn off in excess of those you take in, you will lose approximately one pound. 3500 calories sounds like a lot, and it is. If you weigh 180 pounds, for example, you only burn off about 500 calories working out for 40 minutes on the elliptical trainer at your local gym.

If you are not morbidly obese, then most doctors will advocate losing about 1-2 pounds per week through diet and exercise for their patients who need to lose weight. Of course, before beginning any new exercise program, check with your doctor to make sure you’re healthy enough and work up to your goal gradually so you don’t exceed your limits.

So here’s how the One Plus One weight loss program works. Your goal will be to lose two pounds every week: One pound through additional exercise, and one pound through reducing your caloric intake. One Plus One. The first part of the program calls for you to burn an extra 500 calories a day, seven days a week. That’s 3500 calories per week, or roughly one pound of weight loss.

The other half of the program is to reduce your daily intake of calories by 500 over your current level. This, of course assumes that you are at a static weight, neither gaining nor losing before you start he diet. If you are regularly gaining a pound a week, then you got to reduce your caloric intake even more to see best results, but let’s assume you’re starting from equilibrium. Reducing your daily intake of calories by 500 should be done with two goals in mind. First, eat healthier foods. Make as much of your daily diet fruits and vegetables as you can. Avoid processed foods. Eat red meat very sparingly, and eat lean chicken or fish several times a week. Do not drink soda pop, not even zero calorie diet soda.

Second, use portion control to take charge of the number of calories that you eat at each meal. Get a good kitchen scale and measure out your serving sizes when you prepare your meals. You can’t control your calories if you don’t know how much you’re eating. Keep a running tally of your daily calories for a week or two before you start the program to get a baseline daily intake. Then, using portion control and healthy eating habits, reduce your daily intake by 500 calories a day from your baseline.

As always, when you visit your doctor, tell him about your diet and exercise plan, and make sure you are getting an appropriate number of daily calories. He may adjust your daily intake up or down based on your individual situation. Following the One Plus One plan will have you looking forward to stepping on the bathroom scall each week instead of dreading it.
