The Memory Foam Difference

All mattresses are not created equal. Each person has a preference for which type of mattress helps them have the most comfortable night’s sleep. Some prefer a box spring and inner spring mattress, some like pillow top for the soft sensation it provides. If you find that you cannot get a full night of uninterrupted sleep, it may be time to consider a different kind of mattress – a memory foam mattress.

Memory foam mattresses are made of polyurethane combined with other chemicals to form a springy resilient material. Memory foam material is heat sensitive. When cool, the foam is naturally quite firm, becoming softer when it is exposed to warmth. This gives it a unique property when used in mattresses. While cool, the mattress provides firm support for anyone laying on it. As the body heat of a person on the mattress warms the material, it softens and assumes a shape similar to that of the body laying on it. This provides a custom fit for anyone on a memory foam mattress, and is a feature impossible to replicate with a conventional innerspring mattress.

Different people will have differing experiences when using a memory foam mattress. In many cases the unique properties of memory foam mattresses are able to provide comfort to individuals normally unable to achieve a comfortable night’s sleep. Because it supports a body evenly across all points, it can provide relief from the aches and pains developing in the muscles overnight.

Each night when people lay down to sleep, they assume the most comfortable position they can and nod off. As time passes, they tend to toss, turn, roll over, or otherwise adjust their position to deal with the onset of muscle tension or strain. This happens because the human body is not a solid block of right angles. Human bodies have curves, joints, and nonlinear structure. Memory foam mattresses adjust to the contours of any individual laying on them to provide a correct fit for their body mechanics.

Because it conforms to your shape when you lay on it, a memory foam mattress may cause a user to feel warmer than he or she normally would while sleeping on an innerspring mattress. In the past, memory foam mattress owners have complained that they may become uncomfortably warm. Newer forms of memory foam, combined with the proper mattress cover, reduce this to a negligible concern.

Chiropractors and orthopedists sometimes recommend memory foam mattresses to their patients. The ability to support a body evenly across all points of pressure can provide great relief from the pain of their patients suffer. In conjunction with a memory foam cervical pillow, the relief obtained can be dramatic.

Memory foam mattresses can be purchased in varying degrees of quality. As a general rule, the mattress or firmness of the mattress is often measured in pounds per cubic foot. Mattress densities of 5 pounds per cubic foot or higher are generally considered the highest quality level.

People finding that their current bed is no longer comfortable should consider a memory foam mattress as a replacement. They offer a new level of comfort, stability, and potential for reduction of pain. With new manufacturing processes bringing the price down each year, it can be an economical and an extremely pleasant way to enhance your sleeping experience.
