Discovering and Strengthening Family Ties

The study of genealogy is one of those things that people do for themselves and their own pleasure that turns out to be a wonderful gift to others as well. Most people undertake to learn genealogy in order to better understand their own family tree and for the personal satisfaction of the pursuit of that knowledge. Once they start making progress, however, relatives becomes very interested and even unrelated friends start asking about the techniques and methods.
A family tree derived through he pursuit of genealogy is a wonderful thing to bring to family events such as a family reunion. You’ll be surprised at how many people gather around during the course of the event to find out who their ancestors were and exactly how they are related to all the other people in attendance. It’s fun to see how relatives react when they learn about a new branch of their family tree, or they find a famous name in among their distant relatives.
Often, once the rest of the family learns that you are undertaking to create a family tree, they’ll provide you will everything they know about their own ancestors. While this usually doesn’t get much farther that great- grandparents, every lit bit helps and saves you from having to research it on your own. Creating a detailed family tree is also a wonderful excuse to write to relatives with whom you haven’t communicated in ages. Send them a letter explaining what you are doing and asking for any information they have. Such a letter can help reestablish lines of communication as well as help you in pursuit of your ancestral heritage.
Often, if the subject comes up in conversation with your friends, you’ll find that interest in genealogy and discovering one’s family history is quite widespread. Many times, friends will ask how you found out all the information that you have in your family tree. Some will find the research too daunting a task, but others will take a more serious interest in the hobby and will want to learn more. It can be fun to compare notes with other hobbyist genealogists as you both start working to uncover some of the older records of births, marriages, deaths, military service and immigration that pertain to your respective families. If you both look hard enough, you may eventually uncover some distant connection between your two families. After all, family trees have many long and complex branches stretching back and expanding the farther back int ime one goes.
The study of genealogy can not only uncover distant family relations from days gone by, but can help strengthen today’s family ties and friendships.
